Project introduction

This pattern overview introduces a plush cat from Amigurumi Today, a free toy design with cartoon character charm, a cuddly body and carefully shaped details. It is an overview only, not a full tutorial, so use it to review the project, materials and construction approach before you begin. For the complete steps, see the Original designer’s pattern and instructions on the source site.
Gather the yarns and tools below before starting, keeping the two yarn weights separate because each serves a different part of the cat. The bulky chenille forms the main plush pieces, while the finer yarn is listed in three colors for smaller details. Having both hook sizes ready will also help you move between sections without searching mid project.
- Bulky chenille yarn: Himalaya Dolphin Baby in gray 80320 (2 skeins), white 80308 (half a skein) and pink 80346 (less than half a skein)
- Fine yarn: Yarnart Jeans (160 m / 50 g; 55% cotton, 45% acrylic) in black, white and yellow
- 2.0 mm and 4.0 mm crochet hooks by Tulip
- 15×10 mm safety eyes
- Fiberfill
- Scissors and sewing needle
- Stitch marker or yarn scrap for marking the beginning of each round
The finished cat measures about 36 cm (14″) tall including the ears, although the source notes that your final size will depend on the yarn weight and hook size you use. The skill level is listed as intermediate, which suits makers who are comfortable working in rounds, changing colors and assembling separate plush pieces with neat, secure finishing.
Access is straightforward but format specific: sign in on the source page and scroll down to find the free online version of the pattern. A PDF version is also offered in the Amigurumi Today shop as a separate format, so do not assume that the free online access covers the PDF or that the shop format changes the online option.
Plush Cat Free Toy Crochet Pattern Overview

The pattern works in US terminology and uses a standard set of abbreviations, including ch for chain, st for stitch, sc for single crochet, inc for increase, dec for decrease, sl st for slip stitch, dc for double crochet, hdc for half double crochet and puff for puff stitch. Brackets signal repeated instructions, while square brackets show the stitch total for a round or row.
Work proceeds in continuous rounds unless the pattern states otherwise, with the beginning of each round marked. The arms provide a clear example of the construction: make two, begin with white chenille yarn and the 4.0 mm hook, then change to gray for the longer section, working in back loops only at the change. Stuff only the bottom part, flatten the edges and close them with single crochet through both layers before fastening off.
