This Pattern Overview introduces Little Pony Amigurumi by Jana Whitley, a free Ravelry download for a cute stuffed pony toy. This article is only an overview, not a full tutorial, so you will find the complete step-by-step instructions through the designer’s own pattern page linked below.

The design is a three-dimensional amigurumi softie in the animal category, released as a written pattern through Jana Whitley’s Ravelry store. Her notes describe it as drawing inspiration from four familiar My Little Pony characters: Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash. You can follow those color ideas or mix up your own playful combinations for a one-of-a-kind pony.

Made with DK or sport weight yarn and a 3 mm or 3.25 mm hook, the finished pony stands 6 inches (15 cm) tall. If you prefer a bigger toy, switching to worsted weight yarn with a 3.5 mm hook yields a pony of about 7 or 8 inches tall. Choosing your hook and yarn weight is the simplest way to scale the project up or down.

The source checklist is refreshingly short, so gathering everything takes only a few minutes. You will need DK or sport weight yarn in your chosen pony colors, with Stylecraft Special Double Knit, Baby Bee Sweet Delight, and Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! Sport Weight Solids given as examples. Beyond yarn, the pattern calls for a handful of everyday notions that most crocheters already own.

  • DK or sport weight yarn in body, mane, and accent colors
  • 3 mm or 3.25 mm crochet hook, or a 3.5 mm hook when using worsted weight yarn for a larger pony
  • Two 6mm black plastic eyes per pony (not recommended for children under 3)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Pins for positioning parts
  • Yarn needle for sewing
  • Stitch marker for spiral rounds

Each piece is worked in continuous spiral rounds, after which the parts are sewn together into the finished pony. The pattern expects you to read crochet instructions confidently and know the core stitches, from chains and slip stitches through single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet. Shaping comes from increases and decreases, sometimes worked in the front loops or back loops only, and you will finish by stitching pieces together and weaving in your ends.

The pattern itself is a free Ravelry download from the designer’s store, and the listing carries an overall rating of 4.9 from 7 votes.
