Project introduction

This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. The Floppy Paws Bear is a cuddly crochet bear pattern by Marie Segares of Underground Crafter, designed to be big and huggable while still traveling well. To make your own, visit the Original designer’s pattern and instructions, where the creator publishes the complete free pattern.
The sample version is a soft off white polar bear in bulky number 5 yarn. You may choose any colors you like, so a classic brown cub or a bright novelty shade all suit the same friendly construction.
Crochet Along Updates
This bear kicked off the sixth annual Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet, a group event in which designers release soft toy patterns that crocheters work at their own pace. As the first pattern of the 2023 event, the Floppy Paws Bear makes a fitting starting project for anyone who enjoys making toys in community.

Floppy Paws Bear
At about 19 inches (48.5 cm) tall when assembled and stuffed, the Floppy Paws Bear is a substantial softie in bulky weight yarn and a US Size H-8 (5 mm) hook. The limbs are left unstuffed so the paws flop loosely, giving the bear its name and making it easy for a child to carry on adventures.

The bear is built from separate single crochet pieces: a rounded head and torso, two ears, a muzzle, upper limbs, and lower limbs ending in shaped back paws. The head and torso are stuffed firmly, the limbs stay unstuffed apart from the stuffed, whipstitched paws, and 15 mm black safety eyes sit at the sides of or just above the sewn-on muzzle.
The face earns its charm through simple embroidery in the contrasting color: a satin stitched triangle nose and a back stitched smile on the muzzle. Each ear is folded across its diameter and seamed before final assembly, when every piece joins using the long yarn tails left for seaming.
Gather this complete checklist before you begin, exactly as listed by the source:
- Lion Brand Hue + Me yarn, a bulky (number 5) blend of 80% acrylic and 20% wool (4.4 oz/125 g, 137 yd/125 m per skein): 2 skeins in 098AS Salt for the main color and 1 skein in 102AF Bellini for the nose and smile. Any bulky acrylic and wool blend may be substituted, needing about 205 yd (187.5 m) of the main color and 5 yd (3.5 m) of the contrast color.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or the size needed to get gauge
- Locking stitch markers
- Yarn needle
- Fairfield Poly-Fil Premium Polyester Fiber Fill, 12 oz bag
- 15 mm black safety eyes, 1 pair
Finished size is approximately 19 inches (48.5 cm) tall, measured from the tip of the ears to the bottom of the back paws after assembly and stuffing. The head measures 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter through round 7 for gauge; exact gauge is not critical, but keep stitches tight so the fiber filling does not show through.
The pattern is published free on the designer’s website, and an ad-free PDF is also available for purchase on Ravelry. The free web version does not prove the PDF is free, and the paid PDF does not mean web access costs anything.
