Project introduction
This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial, of a Father’s Day crochet gift that turns an ordinary mug into a superhero-style present. Kids can give it to show appreciation, and the cosy is meant to fit most standard mugs while allowing for small size variations. For the complete instructions, see the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.
The design works as a wrap for a favorite mug, a way to dress up a new mug before gifting it, or a cheerful upgrade for a workplace mug. The source presents it as a sweet reminder of family love during the workday. Because this is only an overview, use the designer page for row-by-row directions and charts.
FREE FATHER’S DAY GIFT IDEA MUG COSY CROCHET Pattern Overview

The Super Dad Mug Cosy pattern is free to view online, and all Hooked On Patterns designs use US crochet terms. An ad-free PDF is available for purchase with extra photographs and two text font graphs; the source also describes a separate printer-friendly version for £3.50. The design is by Ling Ryan for personal use, with finished items sellable when credited. Do not copy or redistribute the pattern itself.
What will I need to crochet a Mug Cosy?

Gather supplies before you begin: this small project uses three yarn colours plus basic finishing tools. The amounts below are source estimates, and the hook should match the stated gauge. Being prepared makes the cape, button loop and embroidered lettering easier to manage.
- Aran or Worsted weight yarn: about 20g/40yds in the main colour, about 10g/20yds in the cape colour, and a small amount for the text colour.
- 100% acrylic yarn was used for the samples; the source says any Aran/Worsted weight yarn you prefer is acceptable, including Stylecraft Special Aran.
- 4.5mm crochet hook, or the size needed to obtain gauge; yarn needle; scissors; and a button between 10-20mm in diameter.
Gauge is a 2 inch, 5cm, square equal to 10 single crochet stitches by 10 rows, worked with a 4.5 hook and Aran, US Worsted, yarn. Finished cosies are about 8cm/3″ high by 25cm/10″ long, sized for most standard straight-walled mugs.
Father’s day crochet gift
This design uses basic US crochet terms: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. Parentheses show how many stitches should remain at the end of a row or round. The source also explains its own punctuation conventions for reading stitch placements and repeats, so beginners should review those notes on the designer page before starting.
Super dad mug cosy

The cosy starts as a main-colour panel worked from a starting chain along the back bumps. Skipped chains form the button loop, while the remaining stitches form the body. Starting chains are turning chains and do not count as stitches. The panel continues in single crochet, then the final row joins it with chains and a slip stitch into the opposite corner.
Fasten off, tie the starting and tail ends together, and weave in the ends. The result is a simple wrap with a loop closure, ready for the cape, button and lettering below. Keep tension even so the edges stay neat and the loop functions smoothly.
Add the cape

The cape is worked in the cape colour after the main panel is complete. The source joins the yarn with a single crochet directly into the chain stitch, using the slip knot on the hook as a loop, then works along the top edge of the cosy. Shaping uses a short row in back loops followed by double crochet increase rows, while starting chains do not count as stitches. The cape is fastened off with ends woven in.
Add your button

Choose any button that fits through the button loop; the source sample used an 18mm button. Attach it to the back bottom corner, positioned one row in from the side edge and along the bottom edge. Test the loop before sewing firmly, so the closure sits flat and the cosy does not twist around the mug.
Add your text

Customize the front with any text or use one of the two Super Dad font graphs, offered in all-uppercase and lowercase styles. Embroider with simple backstitch, treating the single crochet fabric like a cross stitch grid and working from one stitch hole to the next. In the graphs, columns represent rows of single crochet stitches while rows represent individual stitches; work right to left from the right-hand open edge.
Congratulations!
Once the cape, button and lettering are finished, the Super Dad Mug Cosy is complete. Wrap it around a favorite mug or a new mug, and it is ready for Father’s Day. This overview covered the key facts; the designer page has the full pattern, photographs and graphs.
