Project introduction
This article is a pattern overview, not the full tutorial. The Spring Hanging Towel is a free design from Snappy Tots, created for a 2018 crochet along and paired with a companion video so you can work through it alongside the designer. It brings spring color into the kitchen with cheerful towel styles, including chick and bunny versions, all made in cotton yarn that suits everyday kitchen use.
Because the original page carries the complete row-by-row directions, this overview covers what the project involves, which supplies the source lists, and how the pieces fit together, so you can judge whether it suits your skill level and stash before you begin. For the full instructions and video, use this link to the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.
Matching Patterns
The towel belongs to a small spring kitchen collection. The source points to free matching cloths and notes a free placemat was coming soon, while an ad-free PDF with photos and instructions for the hanging towels, matching washcloths, and placemat is available to purchase through the designer’s Ravelry shop. In short, the web version of the towel pattern is free to view, while the printable download covering the whole set is a paid option; the source states no price.
The source lists these supplies for its samples, and it helps to gather everything before you begin. Yarn amounts follow the original colorways, and the chick and bunny versions use different shades, so check the table below before you shop your stash or choose cotton substitutes.
- Yarn: Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie Cotton Yarn (see the table for the sample colorways and yardages).
- Crochet hooks: G, H, and I, each used at a different stage of the project.
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends, plus one 3/4 inch button for the closure.
- Optional for the face: 2 small black buttons for the eyes, a sewing needle and thread, plus embroidery floss or crochet cotton for the smile.
| Sample | Color | Yardage |
|---|---|---|
| Chick | Brite Orange | 20 yds |
| Chick | Sunshine Ombre | 153 yds |
| Chick | Lemony | 40 yds |
| Bunny | Brite Pink | 20 yds |
| Bunny | Popsicle Brights | 153 yds |
| Bunny | White | 40 yds |
The finished towel measures 19 inches long by 9 inches wide when folded. Two tips from the source help you read the original directions without confusion: the first stitch of each row goes into the same stitch as the turning chain, and the numbers at the start of a line may mark steps rather than rows.
Directions

Construction starts at the bottom edge and works upward toward the head. The striped lower section begins with the I hook, then the yarn changes to the main towel color, which continues until the cloth measures 13 inches from the starting edge. The piece is then finished off with ends woven in, laid right side down, and folded so the sides overlap 11 stitches at the right edge, ready to be joined into the hanging top.
The folded top is worked through both layers to close the towel into its hanging form, starting with the I hook and switching to the H hook as the tab narrows. Decreases shape the tab, and one row forms the buttonhole. At the top, the path splits: the chick and everyday versions are finished and tied off here, while the bunny version continues with two shaped ears, each worked in turn from the remaining stitches.
The finishing pieces stay simple. A small flower is made with the H hook from a joined chain ring edged with nine loops, then sewn around the buttonhole so the button slips through the center. An optional face uses stitched yarn for the nose or beak, with two small black buttons sewn on for the eyes. The hanger is a narrow strip worked with the G hook to about 6 inches, sewn to the back roughly 1 inch from the buttonhole, with the button attached to the free end.
