Project introduction

This ghost hand puppet is a featured project in the 2024 Halloween Crochet Along, hosted by Marie from Underground Crafter. The design uses US crochet terms and calls for 8 ply cotton yarn, black yarn or clip on puppet eyes, and a 5 mm crochet hook.
The stated size is 8 / 5 inches, and the source notes it can be customized to any size. Abbreviations include Ch for chain, SC for single crochet, and St/Sts for stitch or stitches.
What you need to know before you begin:
- Yarn: 8 ply cotton yarn, 1 skein.
- Face options: black yarn for sewing, or clip on amigurumi puppet eyes.
- Hook: 5 mm.
- Terms: US crochet terms.
- Stated size: 8 / 5 inches, customizable to any size.
This overview describes how the puppet is put together. It is not a substitute for the Original designer’s pattern and instructions, which contain the complete round by round details.
2024 Halloween Crochet Along:-

The 2024 Halloween Crochet Along is hosted by Marie from Underground Crafter. You can join in by crocheting the patterns as you have time, and by the end of the CAL you will have up to 12 spooky Halloween projects. Makers share progress and finished project photos, and tag their projects and posts #CALCentralCrochet on social media. There is also a CAL Central Crochet Facebook group for chatting with other crocheters, and a visit this thread in the CAL Central Ravelry group.
The puppet is worked in continuous rounds rather than joined rounds. In Round 2 you chain 1, which is not counted as a stitch and is only there to bring the yarn to the height, then work 1 single crochet in the same stitch and 1 single crochet in each of the remaining stitches. You do not slip stitch at the end, and the round finishes with 30 stitches. Rounds 3 through 12 are worked with a stitch marker to keep count of the stitches.
Shaping is done with increases placed at the start of a round and again at the point directly opposite the first stitch. Round 13 works 2 single crochets in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each remaining stitch until the 15th stitch, 2 single crochets in that 15th stitch, then 1 single crochet in each remaining stitch, for 32 stitches.
The source explains that because the starting count was 30, the increases fall at the 1st stitch and the 15th stitch, and that you can find the midpoint by laying the puppet flat even if you are not tracking every stitch. Rounds 14 and 15 are 1 single crochet in each stitch around, still 32 stitches.
Round 16 works 2 single crochets in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each next stitch until the midpoint on the opposite side of the first stitch (the 16th stitch), 2 single crochets at that midpoint, then 1 single crochet in each remaining stitch, for 34 stitches. Rounds 17 and 18 continue the body.
Round 19 works 2 single crochets in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each next stitch until the midpoint, 2 single crochets at the midpoint (the 17th stitch), and 1 single crochet in each remaining stitch. The yarn is cut at the end of the round.
Round 20 is where the gaps for the thumb and pinky finger are planned. You count back 5 stitches from the point where the yarn was cut and mark it with a stitch marker, then count the next 10 stitches from that marker and mark it as well. That marked span is the gap for the thumb. The same is done on the other side to mark the gap for the pinky finger. Laying the puppet flat helps you find the midpoint, which sits right across the first stitch.
These stitches are skipped for now; the thumb and pinky spaces are made after the head of the puppet is finished. You then lay the puppet flat again, join the yarn, and work 1 single crochet in each stitch until you reach the thumb gap, skip the 10 stitches made for the thumb gap, insert the hook directly on the other side, and continue with 1 single crochet in each of the remaining stitches.
The source lists Rounds 21, 22, and Rounds 23 through 27 with no instructions attached. Decreasing starts in Round 28 with 1 single crochet in each of the next two stitches, then 1 single crochet decrease in the next stitch, repeating the sequence of two single crochets and one decrease. From Round 29 onward you keep repeating Round 28 until the gap is closed.
To make a single crochet decrease, insert the hook and draw up a loop so there are 2 loops on the hook, insert the hook into the next stitch and draw up a loop so there are 3 loops on the hook, then yarn over and draw through all three loops on the hook. After the repeats close the gap, work 4 rounds of 1 single crochet in each stitch around without a slip stitch, staying in continuous rounds.
In the last round, work 1 single crochet decrease in each stitch around, or until the gap is closed.
For the face, you can use black yarn to sew the eyes and mouth, or you can clip on amigurumi puppet eyes.
