This friendly monster costume was designed by Nadia Fuad for YARNutopia. The centerpiece is a crocheted green slip-on with a face, which the designer paired with green leggings and a turtleneck that she bought on Amazon. The pattern breaks down into several components: the body, horns, inner eye, outer eye, mouth, teeth, and eyelid. It is worked from the top down, and each component is added after the main body is finished.

Lion Brand Yarn supplied the yarn for the ensemble. The main color is 24/7 Cotton in Lime, with Black and White for the face details, plus Knit Picks Cotlin in Silver for small accents. Three strands of yarn are held together for the body section only; the embellishments use a single strand. Finished measurements are about 16 inches from shoulder to bottom and 18 inches wide, which works out to roughly 36 inches around the waist.

The designer notes that a smaller hook makes a smaller costume and a bigger hook makes a bigger one, and suggests yarnsub.com for checking substitution options.

Hooks and supplies to gather before starting:

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Lime (4 balls, 740 yards total)
  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Black (1 ball)
  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in White (1 ball)
  • Knit Picks Cotlin in Silver (less than 25 yards)
  • H-5.00mm crochet hook, or an I-5.5mm hook for the body
  • F-3.75mm crochet hook for the embellishments
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

The pattern uses standard abbreviations: Ch, YO, St, Sl st, SK, SC, DC, DC2TOG, and DC3TOG. YARNutopia holds the copyright and asks that the pattern itself not be copied, shared, adjusted, or resold, while finished items may be sold with a link back to the YARNutopia website.

Pattern Overview

If any part of the written pattern is confusing or hard to follow, the designer points readers to the video tutorial linked above in the blog post for visual instructions. You can find the Original designer’s pattern and instructions here.

Body

The body is worked in Lime Green with three strands of yarn held together, using either an H-5.00mm or an I-5.5mm crochet hook. It starts with a chain of 54 and is worked in continuous rounds. Round 1 single crochets into each chain to form a ring without twisting the foundation chain, then half double crochet rounds increase the stitch count from 54 up to 100. Round 8 shapes two chain-10 spaces by skipping stitches, and Round 9 puts 10 half double crochet into each of those spaces.

Rounds 10 through 34 are half double crochet in each stitch around. Fasten off once the piece is long enough, then weave in the ends.

Horns

Make two horns in Gray yarn with one strand and a 3.75mm hook. Each begins with a chain of 2 and 4 single crochet in the second chain from the hook. The horns are worked in continuous rounds and in back loops only, adding 2 single crochet in the next stitch each round from Round 2 through Round 10, which brings the count to 12 stitches after Round 10. Round 11 is single crochet in each stitch around, then fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Stuff the horns and sew them to each shoulder, then weave in the ends.

Inner Eye

The inner eye uses Black yarn and a 3.75mm hook. It starts with a chain of 3. Round 1 works 9 double crochet in the third chain from the hook and slip stitches to the first double crochet without turning. Round 2 begins with a chain 2 that does not count as a stitch, then 2 double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first double crochet, and fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Outer Eye

The outer eye uses White yarn and a 3.75mm hook. It starts with a chain of 3. Round 1 works 9 double crochet in the third chain from the hook and slip stitches to the first double crochet, with no turning after each round. Rounds 2 through 7 each begin with a chain 2 and increase by working 2 double crochet in the next stitch followed by double crochet in a growing number of stitches, repeated 9 times per round, growing from 18 to 63 stitches.

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing. To assemble, sew the black inner eye circle to the center of the white outer eye piece, add a fleck of white in the black piece for extra effect, sew the white piece to the body of the costume, and weave in all ends.

Eyelid

The eyelid is worked in green yarn with one strand and a 3.75mm hook. It begins with a chain of 20, then a row of double crochet across, followed by a row of slip stitch, half double crochet, and slip stitch, fastened off with a long tail for sewing. Sew the eyelid to the top of the white outer eye piece, with the half double crochet row on top and the double crochet row on the bottom. The designer sewed only the top down so the lid sits over the eye.

Mouth

The mouth is worked in black yarn with one strand and a 3.75mm hook. It starts with a chain of 42, then a double crochet row, followed by decrease rows that reduce the stitch count, with rows 3 through 5 repeating row 2. By the end of row 5 there should be 24 stitches. Single crochet around the entire piece to clean up the edges, then fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Teeth

The teeth are worked in white yarn with one strand and a 3.75mm hook. It starts with a chain of 38 and forms individual teeth along the foundation chain. Each tooth is shaped with double crochet rows and decreases, then slip stitched down the side back to the foundation chain before the next tooth begins. The repeat continues across, ending with slip stitches down the last tooth, fastened off with a long tail for sewing.

To assemble, sew the black part of the mouth to the body under the eyeball, then sew the teeth to the top of the mouth piece, and weave in all ends. The yarn provided for this pattern is courtesy of Lion Brand Yarn.
