Project introduction

This article is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial, for a Star Wars inspired Rey hat set first shared as a free pattern on Rilla2u. The designer made it after a nurse at her doctor office asked for the hat Rey wears, even though she cheerfully admitted knowing very little about Star Wars at the time. Start with the Original designer’s pattern and instructions for the complete wording.
The finished set brings together three separate pieces: a plain beanie style hat, a short scarf that buttons at the sides of the hat, and a pair of goggles built from two eye sections. You can wear all of the pieces together for the full character look, choose just the scarf or just the goggles, or wear the hat on its own as a simple beanie.
The hat is worked in the round without joining or starting each round with a chain, beginning from a magic ring in double crochet and growing through a series of increase rounds before continuing straight. The scarf is a straightforward half double crochet rectangle, worked as 10 rows of 45 HDC with a chain 1 at the start of each new row, and the designer notes you can add or remove rows to suit the neck or head it needs to fit.
For the goggles, each eye section starts in black yarn and is shaped with single crochet and decreases, then edged in the main color with half double crochet worked around the sides and foundation. A small bridge joins the two sections, a final round in the main color and then the contrast color finishes the edge, and separate straps make the goggles removable rather than appliqued on, as the nurse requested.
Pattern format and preparation
Before you begin, gather the short supply list exactly as the designer gives it, and check colors carefully because the main color carries most of the hat and goggle edging, while the contrast color and black are only needed in small amounts. There are no extra tools listed beyond a needle for weaving ends and buttons for fastening.
- #4 worsted weight yarn in a main color, plus a small amount in a contrast color and black
- 5mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- 4 buttons, with clear buttons used by the designer
This is a free web pattern on the designer blog, presented as written notes for the hat, scarf and goggles rather than as a separate paid download in the source. Use the original post for the full row by row wording before you start, treat this overview as a planning guide, and keep the blog link handy if a shaping step needs checking against the designer own instructions.
The stitches named in the source are familiar basics in US terminology: double crochet for the hat body, half double crochet for the scarf and goggle edging, single crochet for the eye sections and bridge, plus decreases for shaping and slip stitches for the straps. If any abbreviation is new to you, pause and learn that stitch first, because the overview does not replace the designer step by step pattern.
When you finish, weave in ends, decide where the buttons sit on the sides of the hat after the scarf is made, and attach each goggle strap to the sides of the goggles with a long tail left for sewing. The designer adds that the goggles could also work as a relaxing eye mask idea, and she allows selling finished items made from the pattern if you link back to her blog.
