Project introduction

This is a pattern overview of Emilio the Armadillo by Elisa Sartori of Elisa’s Crochet, not a full tutorial. The design is presented as an extremely easy amigurumi project that works up into a sweet little armadillo, and the designer suggests it as a Christmas gift for a child. For the complete row by row instructions, start with the Original designer’s pattern and instructions, which carries the full free version.

The written pattern is shared free on the designer’s website, while a separate downloadable ad-free PDF with 7 pages and more than 30 step-by-step pictures and tips is available for purchase on Etsy. The toy is built from eight separate pieces: a body worked from tail to nose, a shell, two ears, and four legs. The sample uses Lion Brand Heartland, a 100 percent acrylic yarn that is machine washable and dryable.

Real armadillos make charming inspiration. They wear natural armor, dig quickly with pointed snouts, live mostly solitary lives, and are famous for sleeping up to 16 hours a day. This crochet version captures that cozy, curled-up character in soft yarn, which makes it a fun seasonal make.

The source rates this project as beginner friendly. The finished armadillo measures about 8.2 in. long (21 cm). The listed gauge is 20 single crochet stitches plus 20 rows equaling about 4 in. (10 cm), which helps you check that your tension matches the sample before you begin.

Gather these supplies before you start:

  • Lion Brand Heartland (Art. #136), color #136-122G Grand Canyon, 1 ball (A)
  • Lion Brand Heartland (Art. #136), color #136-135J Yosemite (B)
  • Lion Brand Heartland (Art. #136), color #140Q Capitol Reef, 1 ball (C)
  • Crochet hook, size E (3.5 mm)
  • Darning needle set
  • Poly filling
  • Black embroidery thread

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Abbreviations in the source include beg, ch, rep, rnd(s), sc, hdc, dc, sl st, and st(s), standing for beginning, chain, repeat, round or rounds, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, slip stitch, and stitch or stitches.

Body

The body is the largest piece and is worked with color A, beginning from a magic ring at the tail end. It grows through gradual increases worked in single crochet and half double crochet, then continues through a long even section that forms the rounded torso. Later rounds decrease steadily to shape the head and nose area. Stuffing begins during the closing rounds and continues until the piece feels firm and even.

The opening is drawn closed with the remaining tail, which is threaded through the final stitches, pulled snug, and knotted securely. Use the designer’s round sequence for the exact stitch counts rather than guessing.

Shell

The shell is worked separately in color B and later sewn onto the body. It starts from a foundation chain, widens through increase rows into a curved panel, then settles into a long textured stretch that mixes back loop and both loop single crochet with half double crochet for a firm, ridged feel. The panel then narrows through decrease rows back to a smaller edge. A long tail is left at the end for sewing the shell’s edge to the body.

Ears (make two)

Make two ears in color A. Each ear is a single short shaped row that steps from slip stitches through single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet to form a small tapered flap. Fasten off with a long tail so each ear can be sewn neatly to the head.

Legs (make four)

Make four legs in color A. Each leg starts from a ring, increases once, then works even for a short tube before fastening off with a long sewing tail. Stuff each leg lightly so it holds a plump rounded shape when attached to the underside of the body.

Finishing

Assembly brings Emilio to life. Sew the ears to the top of the head, embroider the eyes with black embroidery thread, and attach the shell’s edge to the body. Fasten the four legs to the underside, placing the front and back pairs where the designer indicates, then embroider short vertical lines in color C on the last body round to form the nose. Weave in all ends for a tidy finish.
