Project introduction

This Apple With Worm crochet design is a playful choice for fall and apple season. The finished piece works two ways: as an applique that can be attached to a child’s backpack, a blanket or a T-shirt, and as a cute coaster for a mug or glass.
The pattern comes from GoldenLucyCrafts, where it sits alongside a wider collection of coaster designs. Those include Watermelon, Cloud, Heart, Ocean Themed, Tulip, Wordle, Cinderella Carriage, Whale, Ukrainian and Ghost coasters, offered on the site and in the designer’s Etsy store. If you enjoy seasonal making, the same blog also features fall ornaments, fall earrings, a Halloween Snow Globe and a Poisoned Apple, with more autumn ideas gathered in a Fall Crochet Pattern Collection post and under a Fall tag.
Apple With Worm Crochet Pattern Overview
Abbreviations

The pattern uses US terminology. Before starting, it helps to know these terms: Ch means chain, DC means double crochet, HDC means half double crochet, Rnd means round, SC means single crochet, Sl St means slip stitch, and St or Sts means stitch or stitches.
Skill Level
The designer rates this project Intermediate. It assumes you are comfortable with basic stitches and with switching between colors partway through a piece. The shaping in the apple body, where the outline curves and a gap is left for the worm hole, is the part that asks for the most attention.
Finished Size

The completed apple measures about 5-1/2 inches in height. That scale suits both uses: it sits neatly under a standard cup as a coaster, and it stays visible when sewn onto a larger fabric item as an applique.
Yarn
Medium weight #4 cotton yarn is the requirement, and the designer used Sugar’n Cream cotton. The color plan is set out by letter: Color A is cream for the flesh, Color B is red for the skin, Color C is brown for the stem and blossom end, Color D is overcast for the worm tunnel, and Color E covers the worm in hot green and mod green.
Hooks and Other Materials
Gather these tools and supplies before you start:
Two crochet hooks are called for, a US size H/8 (5 mm) and a US size G/6 (4 mm). You will also want a sewing needle, matching sewing threads, a tapestry needle, embroidery floss in red and black, and a stitch marker.

Notes
One note matters for every round count: the beginning Ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Keep that in mind when you join rounds, because it affects how the totals are read.
Construction Overview

The project is built from four crocheted pieces: a half apple slice, a worm, a leaf and a worm tunnel. Once those are made, they are sewn onto the apple so the worm appears to be emerging from the fruit.
Apple
The apple body starts with Color A in a magic ring, worked in rounds. Rounds 1 through 4 establish the base, increasing from 10 HDC to 40 HDC. Round 5 defines the apple’s outline using single, half double, and double crochets, totaling 48 stitches before fastening off Color A.
In Round 6, join Color B to the previous round’s final slip stitch to create the skin. This round includes a marked stitch and a skipped stitch that forms the worm hole, ending with 56 stitches total. The side facing you is the right side.
The design is an original by GoldenLucyCrafts. The designer’s terms do not allow copying, rewriting, redistributing or reselling the pattern in any form, including video tutorials, or translating and publishing it in another language.
Stem
With the right side facing and the H/8 (5 mm) hook, attach Color C to the stitch where the apple’s last slip stitch was made. Chain 7, then work single and slip stitches to form the stem, finishing with a slip stitch in the joining stitch before fastening off.
Blossom End

Cut two strands of Color C, each about 8 inches long. Hold them together and fold in half. Using the H/8 (5 mm) hook and the right side facing, pull the folded loop through the slip stitch at the apple’s bottom. Thread the four loose ends through this loop, tighten, and trim to approximately 1/3 inch.
Worm Tunnel
Switch to the G/6 (4 mm) hook and Color D. Make a chain of approximately 75 to 95 chains; the exact length depends on how you want the tunnel to run across the apple.
Worm
Using the G/6 (4 mm) hook and Color E, chain 3 and work 2 HDC into the third chain from the hook. Continue with a chain of 10, shaping the body with slip stitches and skips for segmentation, and finish with a slip stitch into the first chain. Fasten off, then embroider the eye and mouth with floss.
Leaf
Use the H/8 (5 mm) hook and Color F, the label used in the source Leaf section. The source Yarn list does not define a Color F; it lists Color E twice, for hot green and mod green. Chain 7, then work a sequence of slip stitch, single crochet, two half double crochets, single crochet, and slip stitch along one side. Chain 1, turn the work, and repeat the same sequence on the other side of the chain for symmetry. Fasten off when complete.
Finishing

Sew the worm in place at the worm hole, then sew on the worm tunnel and the leaf. Fasten off and weave in all ends so the pieces hold up to handling.
